Butcher’s Blade: 10 Best Pocket Cleaver EDC Knives

Jun 28, 2018

Category: Gear

If you’ve dabbled at all in the everyday carry community, you probably know that there are a lot of different knife blade shapes out there. And like building materials, those shapes both serve specific purposes and also go in and out of style. One of the more popular blade shapes right know is the cleaver.

With a large cutting surface and a non-traditional snub-nosed tip, these knives are popular for their aggressive appearance, overall strength, and durability. And since they’re the thing to have right now, there are a lot of brands producing butcher-style folding blades. As is the case with all EDC knives, some of these pocket cleavers are much better than others. So we scoured the web to put together the following list of the ten best cleaver EDC knives available now.

Kershaw Carbon Fiber Pub Knife

By far the smallest of the knives on our list, Kershaw’s 1.8-ounce Pub is perfect for completely discreet carry. And while it works excellently as an EDC blade, it also has some handy bonus functions – such as a built-in bottle opener, screwdriver, pry bar, and more. Really, this is more like a keychain multi-tool than just a great knife.

Blade Material: 8Cr13MoV
Handle Material: Carbon Fiber

Boker Magnum Outdoor Cuisine III Folding Cleaver

Though this folding cleaver from Boker was technically designed as camping cutlery, there’s no rule dictating that you can’t carry it as an EDC knife. And you just might want to when you balance it’s handsome appearance with the excellent 440 stainless steel and rosewood construction, as well as the fact that it has a sturdy liner lock to keep it securely open during operation.

Blade Length: 4.75″
Blade Material: 440
Handle Material: Rosewood

Purchase: $20

CRKT Razel Folding Knife

What makes CRKT’s Razel stand out from the rest of the crowd is the fact that the butcher-style blade actually features two razor-sharp edges: one on the normal front-facing cutting edge and the other on the chisel tip. This makes it a little more versatile than some of the other options on this list. it does, however, mean that the tip is slightly less sturdy, as well, and is more prone to chipping with hard usage.

Blade Length: 3.125″
Blade Material: 8Cr13MoV
Handle Material: Micarta

Purchase: $25

Gerber FlatIron Cleaver Folding Knife

It was only a matter of time before Gerber Gear, one of the largest names in EDC and tactical gear, got in on the cleaver trend. But, we were not expecting them to come out with one as cool as the FlatIron. This handsome folder is well balanced between a stonewashed 7Cr17MoV blade and G10 handle scales and wouldn’t look out of place in the city or out around the campfire.

Blade Length: 3.8″
Blade Material: 7Cr17MoV
Handle Material: G10

Purchase: $35

CRKT Ripsnort Folding Cleaver

Though the Ripsnort’s blade is pretty stout, it makes up for it with its girth – making for a super beefy do-anything everyday carry knife. That’s only bolstered by its durable and grippy polyoxymethylene handle with stainless steel inlays. And the cherry on top of the proverbial cake is the flipper style deployment for quick and easy access.

Blade Length: 2.831″
Blade Material: 8Cr13MoV
Handle Material: Polyoxymethylene

Purchase: $60

OKC Carter Prime Folding Knife

Ontario Knife Company is certainly most well-known for their series of Rat EDC knives. In fact, that line ranks amongst some of the best everyday carry knives of all time. But, that’s not all this knife-making brand has to offer – as evidenced by their superb Carter Prime titanium flipper. It’s a little more expensive than the Rat knives, but we think it is more than worth it.

Blade Length: 3.4″
Blade Material: D2
Handle Material: Titanium

Purchase: $145

Spyderco Roc G-10 Folding Cleaver

No matter the knife style or blade shape, Spyderco always manages to imbue their offerings with their unmistakable style. That’s no different when it comes to their folding cleaver, either. This liner lock EDC knife is equal parts sturdy, reliable, and stunning. And we reckon anyone would be lucky to carry this blade around. And that’s especially true when you realize that this knife’s form is courtesy of master knife designer, Serge Panchenko.

Blade Length: 3.1″
Blade Material: VG10
Handle Material: G10

Purchase: $162

Kizer Sheepdog Titanium Folding Cleaver

If you’re looking for a folding cleaver with a bit of heft to it, this offering from Kizer may just be the one for you. Though, while the blade is as burly as they come (and made from super high quality S35VN steel), the titanium frame lock handle it is paired to gives the knife a reasonable weight to warrant carrying it around with you every single day. It also features a reversible tip-up pocket clip, so you can easily carry it on your left or right side.

Blade Length: 3.3″
Blade Material: CPM S35VN
Handle Material: Titanium

Purchase: $204

JHO Knives GS1 Folding Knife

The “GS” in GS1 is actually short for “Gentleman Slasher.” But don’t let the aggressiveness of the name put you off – it was actually called that as an homage to its inspiration: the straight razor. Sweeney Todd references aside, this absurdly handsome non-locking folder is one of the most striking EDC blades we’ve ever come across. And that’s no wonder when you consider that it came from the same knife maker behind the famous Nug Knife.

Blade Length: 2.64″
Blade Material: CPM S35VN
Handle Material: Titanium

Purchase: $260

VDK Knives War Admiral Cleaver

If subtlety is not your thing, you’re probably looking for a pocket knife like the VDK Knives War Admiral Cleaver. With an aggressive name that matches its intimidating form perfectly, this beefy blade is a lot more than just looks. It’s made of some of the toughest materials out there, built to take a beating, and will keep coming back for more. For those that want all their gear to be just a little bit scary, this is the blade to add to your loadout, for sure.
