When it comes to tough, rugged, and ultra-durable watches, you can’t go wrong with G-SHOCK. The Japanese brand has been making iconic, purpose-built timepieces since the early 1980s, and the brand’s reliability and versatility have made it renowned throughout the world. G-SHOCK burst onto the horological scene with the release of its classic DW5000C, which captured the hearts of collectors for its no-frills design and shockproof construction. Almost 40 years after its release, G-SHOCK is bringing its original timepiece to its lauded MR-G series.
The G-SHOCK MRGB5000 sets itself apart from the original DW5000C by featuring premium metal materials and the artisanal craftsmanship that is synonymous with the MR-G series. Consisting of the MRGB5000B-1 and the MRGB5000D-1 models, the new MRGB5000 duo flaunt a complex, 25-part bezel. To achieve a more elegant and elevated look, G-SHOCK treated each part of the bezel with a sleek Sallaz polishing. This polishing complements both the case’s and bezel’s Ti64 titanium alloy construction, which offers scratch and abrasion resistance, as well as enhanced durability.
As if they weren’t already durable enough, the designers at G-SHOCK constructed the tops of the MRGB5000s’ bezels from a cobalt alloy called COBARION, which is almost four times harder than titanium and shines as brightly as platinum. The new MRGB5000 watches also benefit from an innovative shock-resistant multi-guard design that augments their strength by integrating stainless steel leaf springs and silicon between the bezels’ parts. Other notable features of the MRGB5000 line are its scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, Super Illuminator LED display, Bluetooth enabled communication capabilities, a 200m water resistance, and gold-plated circuit retainer plates that reduce the watches’ electrical resistance.
From an aesthetic perspective, the major difference between the MRGB5000B-1 and the MRGB5000D-1 is that the former features a glossy black DLC finish while the latter boasts a sleek silver finish due to its titanium carbide coating. The G-SHOCK MRGB5000D-1 retails for $3,500 while the MRGB5000B-1 retails for $4,000. Both watches are now available for preorder on G-SHOCK’s website.
