Nixon Packs a Working Compass Into Its Solar-Powered Field Watch

Nixon has spent the better part of three decades as the house brand of surf shops and skate videos, which means it rarely gets credit when it builds something with some real utility behind it. That sentiment has certainly been shifting, though. The brand has been threading solar movements through mainstays like the Time Teller and the dive-ready Stinger 44, and that light-powered push has now produced its most adventure-minded piece yet. Meet the all-new Nixon Oco 44.

Six Months of Juice From a Sunny Afternoon

At the heart of the Oco 44 sits a Japanese Miyota 2170 solar quartz movement, a movement that can sip energy from any light source it can find. We’re talking sunlight, your desk lamp, and even something like the glow of a campfire.

A full charge keeps the watch running for up to six months in total darkness, so battery swaps and winding rituals quickly become a thing of the past.

The Bezel Actually Points Somewhere

The Oco 44 also took its outdoor brief seriously, and has been equipped with a unidirectional compass bezel. It’s deeply knurled around its coin edge for easy gloved operation and is a useful tool when the trail markers disappear.

As the sun sets on those same trails, the lume starts to take over. The hands, the blocky indices, and even the cardinal markers light up after dark, turning the whole dial into a readable instrument well past sundown.

Murdered Out, Mission Ready

The Black/Black version seen here cloaks the 44mm stainless steel case and 5-link bracelet in a stealthy all-black finish, and it’s backed by a GADA-ready 100-meter water rating. At 11.35mm thick, it also stays reasonably trim for rugged watch.

The bracelet pops off via quick-release lugs, and Nixon offers a full menu of 23mm rubber, leather, and Cordura swaps if your heart desires.
