Few living designers have reshaped the world at Norman Foster’s scale. The Gherkin, Apple Park, the Reichstag dome, the list just goes on and on. The 1999 Pritzker laureate has spent six decades proving that engineering and beauty can have truly symbiotic relationship. And yet, in all that time, the man never once designed a watch. At 91 years old, he’s finally crossed it off the list with the Lebond Norman Foster.

The Watch Brand That Only Hires Architects

Lebond might be the most specific concept in all of watchmaking. Founded by Barcelona architect Asier Mateo, the brand releases roughly one Swiss-made watch a year, and each one is penned entirely by a world-renowned architect.

Álvaro Siza kicked things off in 2023 at age 89, Eduardo Souto de Moura followed, and a Gaudí tribute landed earlier this year. Now Foster, working alongside his own Foundation’s Design & Innovation Unit, becomes the biggest signature in the catalog. And this isn’t some licensing deal either. The archive of his hand sketches covers everything down to the clasp.

Losing the Lugs Entirely

Foster’s big architectural move here was subtraction. The 38.5mm Grade 5 titanium case has no lugs whatsoever, with the FKM rubber strap flowing out of the case as one continuous form. The lug-to-lug measurement is literally identical to the diameter.

The watch is just 10mm thick, and the interchangeable case-and-strap system tells us that more variants are on the way. Two editions exist today including a Natural Titanium model mixing sandblasted, brushed, and polished finishes alongside a murdered-out Black DLC version channeling aviation instruments.

A Travel Tool from a Licensed Pilot

Foster actually flies, and decades in the air shaped the watch’s one complication. It’s a bidirectional 12-hour bezel that tracks a second time zone off the main hour hand.

Inside sits the trusty ETA 2892-A2 automatic with 50 hours of reserve, visible through a sapphire caseback. The lone shot of color lives there, too, via a custom five-perforation rotor finished in vivid blue on the titanium model and bright red on the black one.
