Grand Seiko has built their entire reputation on dials that look like snowfields, birch forests, and handmade paper. We’ve waxed poetic about them plenty around here, so a new release from Shizukuishi usually means one question first. What’s the texture? Well, this time around is a bit surprising as the answer is literally nothing. But, that’s also precisely the point of the new Grand Seiko SBGY045 GS9 Club Exclusive.

A 600-Piece Secret Handshake
The GS9 Club is Grand Seiko’s official owners’ community, which basically means the entry fee is owning a Grand Seiko watch in the first place. The club has cooked up member-exclusive watches before, but those were really only regional affairs. The last one, 2024’s SBGW319, was Japan-only and naturally, it sold out in just a few minutes.
The SBGY045 is the first club exclusive that will be offered to members all around the world. It is capped at 600 pieces though with 300 units specifically reserved for Japan. Members even voted on the design during a project that’s been cooking up for the last year.

The Quietest Dial in Shizukuishi
The winning dial wears Minato-nezumi, a soft blue-gray “port mouse” hue pulled straight from Japan’s Edo-period color palette. And, as we mentioned, instead of stamping in a signature texture, Grand Seiko layered translucent gray paint under a thick clear coat polished to an enamel-like sheen.
A gold Arabic “9” sits at 9 o’clock as a nod to the club’s logo, matched by a gold seconds hand and GS signature.
Omiwatari Bones, Calfskin Clothes
Underneath that dial, you get the 38.5mm thin dress case from the beloved SBGY007 “Omiwatari” and the manual-wind 9R31 Spring Drive with 72 hours of reserve. And its power reserve indicator has been tucked onto the movement side to keep the dial pure.
Grand Seiko fitted textured calfskin straps in chocolate brown and light gray to play against all that glassy smoothness.
