After spending nearly three decades at Apple — during which time he served as both senior vice president of industrial design and then eventually chief design officer. — Jony Ive left the silicone valley giant to start his own design firm known as LoveFrom. Back in April it was announced that San Francisco-based design outfit had started work on developing an envelope-pushing jacket, though after nearly four years Ivy’s design company has revealed the fruits of its labor with the all-new LoveFrom, Moncler jacket system.
The Basics
Though it was initially assumed that LoveFrom’s foray into the garment space would likely consist of a spin on one of the Italian fashion label’s signature puffer jackets, this proved not to be the case. Instead, this unexpected collaboration is comprised of a three-in-one jacket system made up of a technical zippered sweater, a mid-shell, and a poncho-like item that can be layered and worn together as a whole, mixed and matched, or have any one of the three layers worn by itself.
The Tech Sweater: The Base Layer
The base-layer of the LoveFrom, Moncler system can probably be best described as a futuristic sweater of sorts. The thing features diagonal hand pockets, a main center zipper, and side zippers that run from the hem all the way up the torso, over the armpit, ad culminate at the wrist cuff.
The Chore Coat: The Mid-Layer
The mid-layer of the LoveFrom, Moncler three-in-one jacket system is more or less a contemporary take on a chore coat with storm-flap equipped breast pockets sitting above a set of flap-style hand pockets. The jacket’s collar can be flipped up or down, too. The entire thing is cut from one giant piece of recycled nylon that utilizes a seamless design, with not a single stitch used to marry the arms and torso.
The Poncho: The Outer Layer
The most unique element in this three-in-one layering system is almost certainly the outer layer. It’s basically a modern interpretation of a poncho that’s been bestowed with a hood, a hoodie-style kangaroo pocket, and a 1/4 zipper. Sporting a pastel color way, the entire system connects and disconnects using a magnetic button system.
The Duo Button System
On top of its idiosyncratic takes on the garments that make up this three-in-one system, another aspect that makes this release so special is its innovative magnetic button system that uses what LoveFrom and Moncler are calling a “Duo Button.” This consists of an inner button and an outer ring that the inner button snaps into using a small piston. The inner button also features a less powerful internal magnet that keeps the piston in place until exposed to the magnet in the outer ring, thereby preventing it from jingling or bouncing around.
