adidas Turned Its Best Trail Shoe Into an Insulated Technical Mule

At this point, it’s safe to say that no silhouette is safe from mule-ification (technical term) that’s transpiring in the the footwear industry. We’ve watched it come for the Samba, Saucony’s ProGrid V2, and Reebok’s Classic (and that’s just the past few months). The recipe is simple; take a retro, delete the back half, and sell it as a loungewear mule.

adidas’ outdoor division continues the trend, bringing us a new technical mule in the adidas Terrex Free Hiker LT Slip-On.

The Free Hiker isn’t just some random, dusty silhouette pulled from the vault either. The silhouette first arrived back in 2019 as Terrex’s do-it-all hiker and has since grown into one of the most trusted nameplates in adidas’ outdoor stable.

So while most sneaker-mules are fashion first, this one actually started from footwear that was built to take a beating.

The Puffer Jacket Treatment

Up top, the LT Slip-On wears a quilted textile shell stuffed with PrimaLoft, the synthetic insulation originally developed for the U.S. military as a down alternative that keeps insulating when wet. And a water-repellent finish helps take care of light drizzle and damp trails.

Instead of surrendering to full slipper status, adidas decided to keep a toggle-cinched speed lace across the forefoot. And that means this thing actually stays put once your walk extends past the driveway.

Underfoot sits adidas’ Dreamstrike foam, reportedly stacked 33mm at the heel and 25mm at the forefoot for a modest 8mm drop.

And rather than the gum waffle most mules get away with, adidas capped it all with a lugged Continental rubber outsole. The only catch is that you’ll need a Japanese shipping address, for now, at least.
