Back in 2015, Volvo acquired the Polestar Racing Team. Interestingly, this buyout didn’t include the outfit’s Cyan Racing division, which, in addition to being the reigning six-time world champion team of touring car racing, has also started applying its expertise to the development and creation of high-performance limited edition restomods. The first of these modernized classics was the Volvo P1800 Cyan, which first broke cover in 2020. Fast forward to today and the Gothenburg-based garage has now pulled the cover off of a new touring-focused version of its built-to-order restomod with the Volvo P1800 GT Cyan.
Each of these grand tourers starts out as an original Volvo P1800 that then undergoes an extensive transformation process that’s meticulously carried out over the course of a 12-to-15-month period. In addition to a part-carbon structure, the chassis of the Cyan-made Volvo has also been bestowed with an updated version of the original P1800 Cyan’s titanium roll-cage. Paired with a more road-focused — but still thoroughly top-shelf and high-performance — fully-adjustable suspension setup, the car’s lightweight framework comes cloaked in a custom set of bodywork crafted from carbon fiber and high-strength steel. Though it largely stays true to the original design from the 1960s, the P1800 GT Cyan’s bodywork has been treated to a trunk lid-set fuel cap, an offset vented hood, and flared fenders at all four corners.
Powering the new grand tourer is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that makes up to 420hp — a figure that allows it to reach 60mph from a standstill in a respectable 4.1 seconds. Further optimized by Cyan over the last four years, this forced-induction four-banger now comes bolted to a bespoke five-speed Holinger gearbox. Equipped with a modern set of custom five-arm wheels, the entire vehicle now weighs in at less than 2,200lbs — making it several hundred pounds lighter than a Miata while making more than double the power. Produced on a made-to-order basis, the P1800 GT Cyan is also offered with an enormous host of configurable options. The first GT-spec example to be delivered has been optioned with a metallic green paint job over a sand-colored interior trimmed in a combination of fabric and leather. At the same time, an original shift knob, a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, and a suite of analog gauges allow the car to keep one foot firmly planted in the past.
Cyan Racing’s Volvo P1800 GT Cyan Restomod is available for order now. While pricing has yet to be revealed, we assume the GT-spec’s starting figure to be similar to (or slightly over) the $700,00 price of the existing P1800 Cyan restomod.
