After a decade of R&D, Rivian finally debuted its inaugural electric pickup truck and SUV models, the R1T and R1S, in late 2021/early 2022. And this past June, the California-based EV brand announced its 2nd-gen models of both (which have yet to be delivered). However, in the meantime, Rivian has partnered with camping mainstay iKamper on a rooftop tent built expressly for these two rugged vehicles.

Why Rooftop Tents?
Becoming increasingly popular in recent years, rooftop tents are a fantastic alternative to standard tents by lifting you above the wet, cold ground, while also helping you evade insects and nocturnal creatures that might potentially bother you throughout the night (or day). Setup is also typically very simple, with some units popping up in a matter of seconds or minutes, all while only increasing your overhead clearance by a nominal amount in transit.

What’s New for the Rivian-Branded Rooftop Tent?
iKamper’s Skycamp series has long been a favorite in the overlanding and camping space, with its own Skycamp Mini offering a two-person sleeping person above ground — a model that won a Red Dot Design Award back in 2020. It’s a no-brainer why Rivian opted to partner with the South Korean outdoor specialists for the job.
Adding extra utility to the adventure-friendly R1S and R1T models, the Rivian x iKamper Skycamp Mini Rooftop Tent builds on iKamper’s own Skycamp Mini, but not by much. You do get some aesthetic choices from Rivian, such as the all-black hardware and the marque’s branding on the sides of both the hard dual-layer, fiber-reinforced plastic shell and 300gsm poly-cotton blackout tent canvas.
An exclusive colorway for the Rivian edition, this exterior shell is also black with a tan-colored tent canvas with yellow accents. There’s also the updated locks and the seamless integration with your Rivian vehicle with the Rivian Adventure Key Set (sold separately) — attaching this to the top of your vehicle requires a much smaller learning curve.

Rivian x iKamper Skycamp Mini Rooftop Tent Basics
Aside from these small updates, you’re essentially getting the same Skycamp Mini that iKamper already makes, which is a great product — albeit $700 cheaper. This means a two-person sleeping capacity, a 137-pound, and 48-inch max interior height when opened (the tent adds just 13.5” when closed).
Opening in just one minute, the four-season tent also comes with a self-inflating mattress, a waterproof polyester 75D ripstop rainfly, and a black metal ladder to help you climb up to get inside. The tent was also designed to be highly aerodynamic to minimize drag when on the road.
