The Outranger Is a 1,450-Pound Fiberglass Base Camp Your Crossover Can Tow

There’s a reason 40-year-old fiberglass campers still sell for insane money on the secondhand market. And that’s because fiberglass is just built to last. Meanwhile, most of the off-road camper trailers flooding the market are still wood skeletons wrapped in aluminum, and it’s not the best approach for something that’s going to be exposed to the elements.

The Oregon-based crew at Motsmann Engineering has just entered the fold and they’re bringing something different to the table. The shop is staffed by folks who spent years building fiberglass bodies for everything from trams and buses to ambulances. Let’s a take a closer look at their first offering, the Outranger.

Fiberglass, Bolts, and Not Much Else

The Outranger’s body is basically six molded fiberglass panels bolted together and sealed with polyurethane. The camper is sitting atop a 3mm galvanized steel chassis that’s also bolted rather than welded. The idea is that if you end up cracking or breaking something on the trail, you can simply unbolt it, swap it out, and keep on camping.

You also won’t find any wood in the entire build. The galley is fiberglass with an HDPE countertop, the interior partitions are polymer, and the lower body wears a matte Raptor coating (this is the same stuff people spray in truck beds). The goal is to never deal with any sort of rot, swollen panels or soft floors after running this thing through its paces.

Timbren Underneath, Wildpeaks at the Corners

Below deck sits Timbren’s 2000 HD axle-less independent suspension on reinforced subframes. It’s rolling on a set of 30-inch Falken Wildpeak rubber wrapping 15-inch wheels.

The whole setup weighs in at a lightweight 1,450 pounds, so you should have no issues towing with your four-banger crossover.

A Galley With Nothing to Winterize

Around back, a tall liftgate reveals a wraparound galley that comes empty by default (most longtime tent campers likely already own a stove). Of course, there are plenty of options to choose from including a Dometic two-burner, a Vitrifrigo drawer fridge, and a gravity-fed sink pulling from a 13-gallon fresh tank. There are no pumps, and no pressurized lines deal with either.

A fold-down side table adds a 48 x 21-inch prep surface, and the cabin fits an 82-inch memory foam mattress under 50 inches of headroom. A 200Ah lithium battery and 12V system come standard, expandable to 600Ah with solar and even Zero Breeze air conditioning on the menu.
