Beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the early aughts, the popularity of street trucks was massive for decades, though would eventually wain in before almost completely drying up by 2010. In the years that have followed, factory-built lifted, off-roaders have become all the rage in the pickup world. Despite the ongoing trend, Ford has now opted to revive the once-mighty street truck with its all new Maverick Lobo.

From Concept To Production

The Maverick Lobo has an interesting path to eventually being earmarked for production. It all started when Joshua Blundo was hired on to be the Blue Oval’s Lead Exterior Designer in 2019. On top of his regular day-to-day duties, Blundo — the owner of a drift truck and an individual that goes by destroy_all_tires on Instagram — began experimenting with modifying a clay model of the Maverick, bestowing the then-new pickup with a bespoke widebody kit, custom wheels, and a myriad of aero elements.

This customized clay model would eventually serve as the inspiration for Tucci Hot Rod’s 2021 street truck SEMA build. And it was after this SEMA project received an incredibly warm public reception that Ford finally signed off on the idea and green-lit what would become the production Maverick Lobo. And after several years of development, the thing is finally here.

Powertrain

The Maverick Lobo features a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine making the model’s usual 238hp and 277ft-lbs of torque. Paired with an all-wheel-drive system, the engine comes bolted to the Blue Oval’s usual automatic transmission, though the normally-eight-speed unit has been modified and turned into a seven-speed, allowing for better ratio spacing — and generally making for a sportier behind-the-wheel experience. And, while there will definitely be owners that leave their Lobo bone stock, Ford’s new street truck was designed with further customization and tuning in mind.

Exterior Elements

Separating the Lobo model from other members of the Maverick lineup is a unique set of bodywork that features a redesigned front bumper, unique vertical grille and front fascia designs, a painted rear bumper, and a diffuser. Collectively, these elements give the truck a much sportier look. Aside from the slammed stance and model-exclusive bodywork, the Lobo’s most striking features is undoubtedly its 19-inch turbofan-style wheels which come finished in gloss black.

Bespoke & Off-The-Shelf Hardware

In order to deliver the Lobo-spec Maverick, Ford’s engineers have utilized a combination of bespoke and off-the-shelf components. The Maverick Lobo gets the Focus ST’s brake calipers, the Kuga’s steering rack, and the Bronco Sport’s twin-clutch rear drive unit. The Mustang Mach-E’s shock tower mounts and the FX4 package’s rear monotube shocks have also been paired with custom springs and dampers that together afford Ford’s new street truck with a slammed stance. A special rear differential and a dedicated track mode have also been added.

Interior Elements

The Maverick Lobo’s model-exclusive features aren’t limited to just exterior details as the cabin has also received a few of its own idiosyncratic elements. The interior sports accent stitching on the seats and steering wheel in a combination of Grabber Blue and Electric Lime, plus gets embossed Lobo logos on the seats. Wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also present.
