Before Ferrari offered current owners (and wishful thinkers) the opportunity to customize, it was rare to see the marque’s street-legal cars in as many colors as there are nowadays — unless the right person asked for one. In this instance, that right person happened to be a member of the royal Brunei family, whose boundless array of automobiles is as envy-inducing as it gets. Unsurprisingly, the eclectic collector got his hands on one of the 400 Enzo models produced, let alone the first-ever matte black Ferrari straight from the factory. Now, this iconic example is up for grabs.
Of course, matte black models from Ferrari’s Tailor Made bespoke division aren’t as hard to come by these days as they were through the 651hp hypercar’s limited run between 2002-04. However, this is a different scenario, and RM Sotheby’s touts this bewilderingly rare lot as “an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire what could be the most significant Ferrari hypercar that few knew existed.” And while it’s the first in some categories, Ferrari’s drivable tribute to its namesake was its last naturally-aspirated, non-hybrid V-12-powered model, proving that virtually every element of this auction is noteworthy.
The groundbreaking one-off came to shape in the summer of 2004 before being sent to the royal family’s London lodgings four months later. Moreover, its odometer insists the Enzo didn’t do much traveling since then, as there are just over 3,560 miles on it. However, the now-obtainable piece of history recently underwent over roughly $114,000 worth of restorations at Carrozzeria Zanasi, Ferrari’s certified hypercar-specific paint shop, which included a thorough repaint to revitalize the gorgeous matte sheen.
The Classiche Red Book-certified 2004 Ferrari Enzo will be auctioned off via RM Sotheby’s between December 5-7. As it stands, there are no price estimates.
