The Mercedes-AMG GT Goes Electric with 1,153 HP and a Fake V8 Soundtrack

Look, we’re not going to pretend for a second that the timing here isn’t a little strange. Seemingly, half the industry is canceling EV programs and writing down billions in losses, and Affalterbach just rolled out its most ambitious electric car yet. Say hello to the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

Built on the brand-new AMG.EA platform, it’s effectively the Concept GT XX made real, and it’s pointed squarely at the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. Whether AMG buyers actually want this thing without a V8 in front of them is the question the next 18 months will answer.

Three Motors, Zero Pistons

The headline number is 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque in the flagship GT63, with the GT55 detuned to a still ridiculous 805 hp and 1,328 lb-ft. Power comes from three axial-flux motors supplied by YASA (the same outfit building motors for McLaren, Ferrari, and Lamborghini hybrids), with one up front and two at the rear.

The whole point of axial-flux is the packaging. The front motor is just 3.5 inches thick, and the rear pair clock in at 3.2 inches each.

A SERIOUSLY Insane Charging Claim

Underneath the floor sits a 106 kWh battery running 800-volt architecture, with 2,660 cylindrical cells cooled by non-conductive oil. Mercedes-AMG claims a peak charging rate north of 600 kW, which is nearly double the Taycan Turbo GT’s 320 kW figure and roughly into that coveted “splash and dash” territory.

If you can find a charger that fast (you mostly can’t, yet), a 10-to-80 percent fill takes just 11 minutes. The WLTP range hovers around 370 to 470 miles depending on spec.

The V8 in the Room

And then there’s AMGFORCE Sport+, which is the thing every enthusiast will be heavily debating and questioning. Twist the right-spoke knob, and the cabin fills with a digitized recording of an actual AMG V8, complete with simulated nine-speed gearshifts and shaker units in the seats. There’s even a fake 7,200-rpm redline on the digital tach.

We won’t mince words here – it’s certainly strange and even a bit ridiculous. But, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N proved this trick can actually work, and AMG has clearly studied the homework. Whether you find it cathartic or cynical probably depends on how attached you were to the old hand-built V8s in the first place.

Straight-Line Absurdity

Zero to 60 happens in 2.0 seconds flat for the GT63, which would tie or break the existing production record (and the GT55 manages 2.4 seconds). Top speed is 186 mph with the optional Driver’s Package on either trim. And the architecture is engineered to handle more than 1,350 hp, which is AMG’s not-so-subtle way of telling you a Black Series version is coming.

Curb weight is 5,450 pounds, which is a lot, but the air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic front rotors should keep things in check.

Recap

2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe

AMG ditches the V8 (sort of) for a 1,153 hp, three-motor electric super-sedan with 600 kW charging and a digitized V8 soundtrack piped through the cabin. Welcome to whatever this is.
