There are a lot of things in this world that are inherently delicate. We’re talking flowers, small animals, porcelain china, crystal stemware, and even high-tech electronics. And while all of those things have their time and their place, we don’t generally haul them around with us. As such, the things we do carry around on a daily basis – our pocket gear especially – we like to be on the more rugged side of the spectrum. Because what’s the point of EDC if you have to be careful all of the time?
Now, we’re not going to tell you that everything on this list is invincible – we know the lengths that people will go to prove they can break something. But, we can tell you that everything we have gathered on this everyday carry essentials list is a mite stronger, more durable, and just generally tougher than most everything else available on the mass market. The following 20 pieces of gear run the gamut from bulletproof, to bombproof, to military drop tested, to just plain rugged as hell. And while yes, you could probably make an example of your destructive abilities and demolish some of them, these are still our picks for the most indestructible everyday carry gear out there right now.
Slughaus Bullet Mini Flashlight
Not only is this tiny flashlight only about the size of the tip of a finger, but it’s one of the toughest out there on the market. In fact, this little LED torch is so strong, you can actually run it over with a car and it still won’t break. Built from aerospace-grade aluminum, the Slughaus Bullet Mini weighs just 6 grams, comes in your choice of finish (black, anodized blue, or silver), and produces 20 lumens of output for a total runtime of 20 hours.
Handgrey Knox Titanium Keyring
While most people might not think about improving upon something as simple as a keyring, we’re supremely glad that the folks at Handgrey decided to take a swing at it. Their Knox 6AL-4V titanium keyring isn’t just tougher than nearly every other keyring on the market, it’s also just genuinely better – thanks, in part, to its stress-free lateral split design which makes adding or removing items a snap. Give your keychain carry the respect it deserves and attach it to the Knox.
Apart from maybe keyrings, shoelaces are probably one of the last things people think of when they’re considering gear that needs to be tough. We think that’s a huge mistake for a couple reasons; namely, laces are an excellent multi-purpose tool in a survival situation and, in normal use, they’re the only things keeping your shoes on your feet. Well, Rhino Laces were made by wildland firefighters to be the absolute toughest laces ever made. They cant be burned, cut, sawed, chopped, or destroyed. But, if you do manage to kill them, the brand will replace them free of charge. Booyah!
You know that power cable that comes with your iPhone? It’s going to break sooner rather than later. Instead of waiting for that to happen, do yourself a favor and pick up one of these Paracables. They’re Apple MFI certified, wrapped with 32 strand paracord that makes them dog-proof (great if you do, in fact, own a dog), have a durable copper mesh wrapping and an EMF shielding sleeve, and even charges your phone faster than standard offerings.
Exotac Waterproof Match Case
While it’s probably not going to survive a direct hit from a sledgehammer, this emergency match case is pretty much indestructible through normal use. Which is excellent to know in case you ever get lost in the woods or the zombie apocalypse occurs. As far as features go, it can fit up to 20 matches (and keep them perfectly dry, even submerged up to 5 meters), comes with backup striking pads and rubber-o-rings, and weighs less than an ounce. If you’re into emergency bug-out gear, this is an excellent addition to have.
Pangea Designs Pickpocket Alpha Multitool
Most pocket clips and bottle openers are made from low-grade steel. Sorry, that’s just the way that things are. This one, a hybrid of both, isn’t. The Pangea Designs Pickpocket Alpha Multitool is built from nigh-indestructible 6AL-4V titanium, is made right here in the USA, has a skeletonized design that weighs just 6 grams, and measures up at just 2.3 inches in length.
Rhino Shield Screen Protectors
Your iPhone is not designed to withstand being hit with a hammer. But it can be, if you attach to it one of these Rhino Shield screen protectors. But, while these protectors will stop your phone screen from shattering upon impact, it also has a few other bonuses included – like a very slim profile, crystal clear transparency, and features oleophobic fingerprint-resistant technology.
UAG Pathfinder iPhone 7 Case
In conjunction with a good screen protector, you might want to slide your smartphone into a ruggedized phone case to protect it even further. We happen to be extremely fond of this offering from UAG. It’s made from a featherlight composite with a patented hardened outer shell and softer impact-resistant core – together offering 360 degrees of protection for your phone. And, in case you were wondering, it meets military drop standards for shock resistance. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Trayvax Original Wallet
Made in the USA from a combination of stainless steel, aluminum, and mil-spec paracord, this is one of the toughest wallets ever created. It also offers RFID protection, can carry up to 14 cards and five bills at a time, and is backed by the brand’s lifetime warranty. If you need a tactical wallet and you are unwilling to settle for anything other than the absolute best, you can certainly depend upon the Trayvax Original wallet.
Handgrey Bauhaus K11 Titanium Carabiner
Not only is this keychain carabiner made from top-notch TI6A-4V grade 5 squared titanium, but it also has the benefit of a unibody construction. That means, since it’s a single piece design, it doesn’t have any breakable small parts – like a separate gate or a tiny little spring to keep that gate closed. So, unless you plan on putting this little guy through a car crusher or a smelter, it’s probably going to outlast any and all of the things you attach to it.
The Ridge Polycarbonate Wallet + Cash Strap
For reference: polycarbonate is the same substance used both in the construction of bulletproof glass and the canopy of the F-22 Raptor jet. And if that kind of application doesn’t say “tough as nails” to you, then we don’t know what will. In any case, it’s that same material that went into the construction of this minimalist wallet from the team at Ridge Wallets. It also has a 12 card capacity, can fit a wad of cash in the attached removable cash strap, and offers RFID protection.
Silicon Power Rugged Armor A60 External Hard Drive
Most technology is inherently delicate – especially when it comes to data storage. Not this portable hard drive from Silicon Power, though. The Rugged Armor A60 external hard drive is military-grade shockproof, IPX4 water-resistance rated, offers up AES 256-bit encryption, and has a minimum storage space of one terabyte. The next time you need to transport sensitive computer files through a war zone, this might be the hard drive you want to put them on.
MecArmy T25 Tritium Glow Bar
The core of this little keychain attachment is made from tritium – a substance that will glow in the dark for up to 25 years without ever needing to “charge” with light. And that makes this a handy tool for anyone who frequently misplaces their keys or needs a little help when trying to dig them out of a commuter pack. And that tritium core is protected by a TC4 titanium alloy frame and three viewing windows made from polycarbonate – the same stuff used to make bulletproof glass. It’s even water resistant to 100 meters, impact resistant to 2, and weighs just 5 grams total.
Griffin Pocket Tool XL Titanium
Rare are the one-piece multi-tools that boast the kinds of features the Griffin Pocket Tool XL offers. Even rarer are the ones that can stand up to incredible amounts of punishment. Not only is this Griffin XL made from supremely tough titanium, but it also offers over 15 different tools – including hex drivers, a pry bar with a nail slot, metric and imperial rulers, wrenches, and a bottle opener. If you’re looking for an extremely rugged everyday carry multi-tool that will basically survive the apocalypse, this one is it.
Tuff-Writer Operator Pen
Tuff-Writer’s offerings are designed to be the absolute toughest pens in the world. These USA-made everyday carry writing utensils can withstand extreme heat, blistering cold, and – since its build from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum – it can take just about all the punishment you can throw at it. What’s even better is that it comes with a Fisher cartridge, giving this pen the ability to write underwater, upside-down, or in zero gravity.
Tex-Lock Bike Lock
Nobody likes having their bike stolen. That’s why bike locks were invented. But, what if you have a bike but your bike lock can’t stand up to bolt cutters? Well, then you get your bike stolen anyway. Unless you have the Tex-Lock bike lock. This is about as close as it gets to an indestructible bike lock. It will resist being cut by bolt cutters; is water-resistant, fire-resistant, and even saw resistant; and comes in a variety of sizes.
Rexford Rut V2 Titanium Utility Tool
Knife designer Todd Rexford knows his stuff – we don’t think anyone would argue that. So it’s no surprise that when he put his mind to creating a ruggedized multitool, he came up with something as formidable as the Rut. Made in the USA, this utility tool is constructed from nearly unbreakable grade 5 titanium; features bottle opener, screw driver, utility knife, and pry bar functionalities; and comes with a limited lifetime warranty from the maker’s own company. And all of that fits into a pocket-friendly format which weighs just 0.8 ounces.
DPx Gear Heat/F Knife
While there are plenty of pocket knives that would get you through a normal day without incident, they probably don’t compare to the kinds of EDC folders made by DPx. And that’s because this brand builds their blades to survive hard use in some of the worst conditions in the world. From the TiCN PVD coated Niolox steel blade, to the G10 handle scales, to the grade 5 titanium frame lock, the Heat/F is one of the toughest tactical folding knives this world has ever seen. It even has a bottle opener built into it for the celebration that comes after you make it through the worst of the worst.
GoRuck GR1 Backpack
Although this tactical backpack is certainly extremely well made by hand in the United States and features some incredibly tough materials – including 1000D Cordura nylon, YKK zippers, and an Armed Forces standard MOLLE grid – we wouldn’t necessarily call it indestructible. It does, however, feature a laptop-sized compartment in its construction that is, in fact, bombproof. That means, even if the bag gets shredded by explosive ordinance, whatever you’re keeping in that compartment will remain safe and sound. And that, to us, is a major win.
Victorinox I.N.O.X. Carbon Watch
Armed with only the knowledge of it’s inner workings (a Swiss made quartz movement) and materials (a carbon composite case and a handy survival paracord band), you might find this watch incredibly desirable. But, it’s even better than it looks, as this I.N.O.X. EDC wristwatch is actually tough enough to survive being run over by a tank. It’s also water resistant to 200 meters, can withstand extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), and even has an indicator to let you know when the battery is almost dead.
15 Survival EDC Essentials
If you’re less worried about your gear surviving a tough situation and more concerned with living through one yourself, then you might want to pick up some of these survival EDC essentials.
