Just as the advent of quartz watches, in particular the Q Timex, revitalized Timex in the 1970s, so has the latest run of reissues of the Q line reinvigorated the Timex brand these past few years. Once surviving the quartz crisis and, more recently, the preponderance of smartwatches, the American-born company has now been relishing in the desire for retro designs by nostalgic consumers.
Having celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first quartz watch with the Q Timex 1972 Reissue earlier this year, the Connecticut-based watchmaker has now added a GMT model to the Q Timex 1979 line for the first time ever. While aesthetically inspired by the dive style of the original Q, this new release is a GMT through and through. Along with signature features such as the bi-directional bezel, domed acrylic crystal, 38mm stainless steel case with hooded lugs, and functional battery hatch on the caseback, this new watch adds GMT functionality thanks to its Swiss-made quartz GMT movement.
The watch’s bracelet has also been changed, as the woven steel item from the original Q Timex Reissue has been swapped out in favor of a retro integrated-style stainless steel bracelet that boasts a blend of brushed and polished flat links. Three versions of the watch exist: a blue and red “Pepsi” bezel, a black and blue “Batman” bezel, and a black and gray bezel on a blacked-out case, with the latter being sold on a rubber strap rather than the bracelet. All three feature lumed hands and indices and a date window at three o’clock.
The Q Timex GMT is currently available via Timex’s online store, where it is priced at $199 for the black on rubber and $219 for the Pepsi on a bracelet. The Batman version, presumably, will be released at a later date.
