Most complications in the watch world get named after things like astronomers or saints. Urwerk, however, built one around a Star Trek hand gesture, and now that watch is heading off into the sunset. The UR-120, nicknamed “Spock” since its 2022 debut, is getting a third and final edition dubbed the Blue Planet, and the independent Swiss outfit is closing the book in deep cosmic blue and 24K gold.

A Genuine Vulcan Salute Complication

The UR-120 runs Urwerk’s signature satellite time display: three hour satellites orbit a central carousel, each one sweeping along an arched minute track before handing off to the next. And as each satellite finishes its run, it splits into two halves that form a “V” before rotating independently and snapping back together to show the next hour.

That little gesture is definitely not a gimmick either. The carousel alone packs an absurd 175 components, with a lyre-shaped spring and Maltese crosses choreographing the whole sequence to micron-level tolerances. It’s one of the most mechanically elaborate inside jokes in watchmaking.

Blue Shell, Gold Guts

For the finale, the 47mm x 44mm case gets a sandblasted finish in a deep blue that’s meant to evoke Earth from orbit. The two-part construction interlocks with no visible seam while the screwless upper shell flows into articulated lugs. And, a hidden spring in the 6 o’clock lug fine-tunes the fit.

Inside, Urwerk coated the lyre springs and Maltese crosses in 24K yellow gold PVD. Per co-founder Felix Baumgartner, the gold isn’t decoration; it marks exactly where energy gets stored and released. All the markings are luminous, and the watch ships on a blue calf leather strap embossed with a ballistic fiber texture.

The Engine Room

Driving everything is the automatic Calibre UR-20.01, which is wound by the brand’s Windfänger airscrew-governed rotor. It beats at 28,800 vph, holds a 48-hour power reserve, and shows off circular graining, sandblasting, and of course, Côtes de Genève throughout.
