Garmin’s Latest Satt Comm Device Affords Smartphones Service While Off-Grid

Backed by a global Iridium satellite network, Garmin’s range of inReach devices already offers impressive off-grid tracking and communication abilities. However, despite already boasting a robust and cutting-edge lineup, the company has now debuted what’s almost certainly the most noteworthy addition to its range of satellite messengers with the all-new inReach Messenger.

As the device’s name suggests, the inReach Messenger was engineered with a major focus on comms. As such, it offers two-way and group messaging, location sharing using GPS-embedded coordinates, and the ability to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center which is staffed 24/7. The most noteworthy feature of this new device, however, is undoubtedly its ability to pair with an existing smartphone while off-grid and out of cell service. Automatically selecting between Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite connectivity, the inReach Messenger can pair with a smartphone and allow it to access a network or connectivity while out of range. Additionally, if the user’s smartphone runs out of battery, it can still be connected to the inReach Messenger device which utilizes a “Safety Charge” — i.e. enough juice to send a custom text message.

Measuring just 3.1” x 2.5” and tipping the scales at only 4oz, Garmin’s new gadget is constructed around an IPX7-rated impact-resistant body. Compatible with an array of flexible satellite airtime plans, the inReach Messenger boasts a rechargeable Lithium battery that affords up to 28 days of life (when in 10-minute tracking mode). Garmin has also launched a companion app for the inReach Messenger. It is, however, worth noting that, like all inReach models, using the inReach Messenger requires an active satellite subscription.

Available now, the Garmin inReach Messenger has been priced at $300.
