Freewrite started as a humble Kickstarter back in 2014, and with the drop of the Traveler in 2018 (a portable e-ink writer that allows you to write without distractions and then upload your work to the cloud), the company cemented itself as a truly unique player in the tech scene. But the label’s mission has stayed the same, working to keep the drafting and editing process separate while tuning out distractions. The team at Freewrite is undoubtedly inspired by the past, leaning on the typewriter for the initial inspiration of the Traveler, but now they’re looking to the ‘90s for the Freewrite Traveler “Ghost” Edition, a transparent take on the portable writer.
The clear hook with this special edition drop is obviously the very ‘90s transparent body and keys. It’s clear the label is having some fun with this one and encouraging users to have some, too, stating, ”Feel like a kid again and rediscover the joy of writing without boundaries.” This transparent style also complements the Traveler’s already somewhat ‘90s-esque clamshell design, and makes for a simultaneously futuristic and retro look.
Besides the new see-through look, the rest of the device offers the same convenience/features as the original Traveler. You get an adjustable 135-degree E Ink display without glare or backlight (that can be seen even in sunlight), a super light form factor weighing just 1.6 pounds, and a full-size scissor-switch keyboard. The Traveler automatically syncs to WiFi (that you’ve previously connected to) and uploads your drafts to the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about backing up your work either.
The Freewrite Traveler “Ghost” Edition is available now for $599, but Freewrite has stated that only one batch was made, so you’ll want to act fast if this catches your eye.
