Nike has been a fixture in the golf scene since the early ‘80s, outfitting legendary athletes like Glen Day and Tiger Woods with tournament-winning gear. As the sport continues to increase in popularity (especially here in the States, with more Americans playing now than they have historically), Nike has been redesigning some classic silhouettes to capture the growing audience. The Swoosh gave the Air Max 1 a golf-ready redesign in 2019, outfitting it with a water-resistant upper and better traction, and now they’re back with the Air Pegasus ’89 G, a retro pair of runners redesigned for golfing.
Building off the Air Pegasus ‘89s, this redesign stays pretty faithful to the OG, with a few additions to make it more golf-friendly and weatherproof. This starts with a water-resistant upper featuring a blend of mesh, stretch skin, and synthetic overlays to keep your feet dry. Down below, the rubber outsole has a traction pattern that’s also inspired by the Air Pegasus ‘89s and offers a reliable grip on wet/rough terrain. Since these are based on running shoes, you’re getting runner support with two layers of foam in the forefoot and heel, along with a hidden Zoom Air unit also in the heel.
As for the colorways available at launch, you can choose between two monochromatic black-and-white options, or the more colorful picks that feature pops of magenta or this blueish-grey featured in the colorway we’ve included here. The Air Pegasus ‘89s were revived back in 2019, and while the silhouette is still sort of a deep cut in Nike’s catalog, there’s no denying the loveably retro look and unique color blocking.
