As we wind down the days until 2023, it’s safe to say that few brands dominated the sneaker world this past year as much as New Balance. While Nike might still carry the torch in the streetwear community, NB has clearly done its best to try and inch closer, and its new, GORE-TEX-coated collab with UNITED ARROWS is one example of how.

As one of the famed performance brand’s most consistent collaborators, it’s no surprise to see the Japanese clothier churn out an extra pair of New Balances before the turn of the year. For the sake of this new release, both brands play it relatively safe, all the while implementing weather-ready tech that outdoorsmen have come to live by.

The standard 57/40 silhouette retains its modern-day style points, boasting an upper comprised of supple, textured suede finished in a stark shade of black. And while you may be under the impression that a GORE-TEX jacket is the most crucial element of a winter wardrobe, think again. There’s nothing more irritating than stepping around in a soaking pair of shoes, deeming this waterproof set of kicks an ideal way to get around on foot all season long.

Keep your feet dry for the unforeseeable future with the 5740 GTX, available on New Balance’s Japanese webshop for ¥24,200 (~$183).
