While its current reputation is that of a high-end fashion brand, Moncler spent its early days in the 1950s and ‘60s outfitting explorers and mountaineers on treacherous climbs to the tops of the world’s most daunting peaks. Two decades ago, however, the French-Italian firm was saved from bankruptcy by transitioning into luxury fashion. And its latest release fuses its outdoor origins with its present proclivity, teaming up with preeminent footwear designer Salehe Bembury for a new pair of hiking boots with definite style.
Streetwear Meets Utility
Collaborating in the past with the likes of New Balance, Crocs, Vans, Yeezy, and Clarks, Bembury has now returned for his 2nd outing with Moncler, combining streetwear and utility with his multicolored take on their Trailgrip hiking boots.
Part of the new Moncler Équipements Amoeba capsule that also includes the Amoeba Utility Pack, the Trailgrip Amoeba sports Bembury’s signature geometric design language. Available in White, Sunset Orange, and Heather Purple, the mid boots have durable mixed-fabric uppers consisting of breathable mesh and textured rubber overlays. All said, the uppers alone feature 6 different colors and/or textures for a dynamic yet complementary look. Above the midsole there’s a giant text that reads, “equipements.”
Built to be Comfortable and Lightweight
Underneath is a waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX membrane for taking these out in any weather — although, at over $800, I wouldn’t recommend taking these very far. Meanwhile, an Ortholite insole was added for extra comfort wherever you’re headed.
For the midsole, Bembury and Moncler opted for an EVA foam that “adds flexibility and lightness,” bolstered even further with a layer of lightweight carbon fiber between the midsole and tread that also helps with stability and responsiveness. At the very bottom, a Vibram Megagrip provides immense traction on a myriad of surfaces, whether you’re heading into the wilderness or the urban jungle.
There’s Also the Amoeba Utility Pack
For those curious about the Amoeba Utility Pack, it’s a zippered pouch intended for carrying your gear while adventuring or heading into the city. Coming in purple, green, or blue, it’s made from a water-resistant lycra material and sports a zipper closure with Bembury’s signature puller. Meanwhile, the top of the bag is tethered to a climbing-inspired cord for strapping to your bag or around your shoulder.
