Most sneaker collabs don’t really end with any sort of announcement. Typically, they just sort of stop happening after a while, or worse, they end up getting milked into colorway oblivion until nobody cares anymore. So credit to On and POST ARCHIVE FACTION for doing something almost nobody in this industry does – they announced their partnership finale and are giving it a worthy sendoff.
The Current Form 5.0 closes out six seasons of the Swiss brand’s partnership with the South Korean label, and it’s anchored by a brand-new silhouette, the Cloudsoma PAF.
A Breakup Set in Stone
When we covered the Cloudboom Volt PAF back in June, we noted how rare it was for a brand as mainstream as On to keep handing its performance gear to a label this experimental. It also turns out that they were already planning the goodbye.
To mark it, the two brands tapped land artist Strijdom van der Merwe to build a circular stone installation on the island of Tenerife. And it’s not your traditional pop-up, either. The thing is permanent, and will double as a functioning trail loop for local runners. It’ll also get its own three-part documentary featuring PAF co-founder Dongjoon Lim.
Reading the Rocks
Fittingly, the shoe itself is built for the terrain that inspired it. The Cloudsoma PAF is a trail runner riffing on mountains and rock formations, with an asymmetrical lacing system meant to echo the cracks running through stone.
The quick-drying, sock-like upper is woven from recycled polyester with swirling linework throughout, and PAF kept the palette appropriately geological. There are three colorways in total including Cobble/Raven, Black/Black, and Haze/Linen.
Naturally, these things are packed full of tech as well. CloudTec Connect pods flex independently over uneven ground while Helion HF hyper foam (the same stuff in the Cloudmonster 3) handles the bounce. On the bottom end, a Missiongrip outsole with short, flat lugs helps these seamless transition from pavement to dirt.
