Levi’s is an American institution with 170 years of experience outfitting miners, workers, and adventurers. But the label never rests on its laurels, and collaborates with a variety of both modern and heritage brands to create unique products. And now that the 501 silhouette is celebrating its 150th birthday, Levi’s and New Balance teamed up on a pair of retro, ‘90s-inspired runners: the Levi’s x New Balance 580s, made with Levi’s Shrink-to-Fit denim.
We’ll get into what makes these shoes structurally great, but the hook here is Levi’s signature Shrink-to-Fit denim, which is used alongside supple suede to make for a unique upper (with a retro rubber 580 logo on the tongue). Below that, an Abzorb midsole with C-Cap cushioning keeps your feet comfortable while providing enough resistance for running. Adding to the midsole’s support, New Balance’s Rollbar stability system is used to minimize rear-foot movement and keep you stable. Finally, the kicks are finished with the iconic Levi’s red tab on the right shoe.
Taking inspiration from the home of mountain biking, Marin County, Levi’s, and New Balance have redesigned the MT580 silhouette to honor the 501s’ legacy and the original style’s trail roots. And both of the bright colorways on offer are clear nods to the funky ‘90s outdoor gear that’s making a bit of style comeback at the moment. You can choose between the dark gray pair with pops of blue and pink, or the beige ones with blue and purple.
The Levi’s x New Balance 580s are available now for $150 in “Dark gray with blue and black” (with nubuck overlays) and “Beige with black and blue” (with hairy suede overlays). Do keep in mind that you’re limited to one pair per order, so make sure you’re getting the colorway you want.
