While the Birkenstock Bostons are definitely having their moment right now, the ubiquitous popularity of the silhouette has given the German shoe manufacturer a newfound popularity in the style space, and it’s not just hippies and hikers rocking Birkys anymore. While the label isn’t best known for its outdoor offerings, the label offers a few silhouettes that use its proprietary Birko Flor material (a synthetic leather) for a bit more water resistance. But Birkenstock is always innovating, and just dropped the outdoor-ready Birkenstock Mogami Terra sandals.

Built to handle any terrain and made in Germany, these hard-wearing sandals are made with a waterproof contoured PU footbed and the label’s proprietary Birko Flor, a synthetic leather alternative that’s used in Birkenstock’s more affordable silhouettes (like those vegan Arizonas). The Birko Flor material is also water-resistant and tear-resistant, making it the perfect choice for an outdoor sandal. Also returning from the Arizona silhouette, you’re getting that familiar pair of adjustable straps on the upper, along with a hook-and-loop backstrap for added stability. The sole is also made of polyurethane and attached directly to the footbed, and the thick TPU lugged outsole is made to handle anything (the material construction here also makes these sandals entirely waterproof).

Birkenstock has tried its hand at outdoor shoes before, with silhouettes like the Tatacoa, but this drop seems like a bigger shift towards expanding the label’s outdoor offerings and using the Birko-Flor material for more rugged silhouettes. The use of this synthetic leather alternative is also a bit more sustainable than leather, something that Birkenstock is pretty good about, considering that the label has a reliable repair process if you send them your shoes.

The Birkenstock Mogami Terra is available now for $100 in the Eucalyptus colorway featured here, along with Elemental Blue and Whale Grey.
