Arc’teryx’s Smarter Kragg Slip-On Finally Embraces Its True Calling as a Travel Essential

When you design a shoe with hybrid functionality, you better expect people to use them in ways other than what was intended. That’s exactly what happened with Arc’teryx’s Kragg slip-on.

Part of the brand’s first fully in-house footwear collection in 2024, the Kragg has always meant well. The idea behind the model was a bouldering/climbing shoe that was also an agile hiking slip-on. The problem was that those looking to engage in hardcore outdoor activities were more likely to opt for something 100% purpose-built, and those who wanted a comfortable, decently-grippy slipper for travel or commuting gravitated towards the Kragg instead.

This time around, Arc’teryx is paying attention and has revised the ostensible climbing slipper with some features that embrace what it’s actually being used for.

Born on the Crag, Adopted by the Airport

Arc’teryx had been licensing footwear from third parties for years before finally bringing development in-house around 2022, centered at their Portland Creation Centre. The Kragg was one of the flagship results of that pivot — a freehand sketch born out of athlete sessions that evolved into a moccasin-inspired pull-on designed for quick crag access, belaying, and post-climb recovery. It launched in March 2024 alongside the Sylan trail runner and Vertex Alpine approach shoe, at $160.

The original featured a stretchy Spacermesh upper, a collapsible heel that let the shoe convert into a slipper, a protective toe cap, and a Vibram Megagrip outsole. By all accounts, the formula worked — just not entirely as planned. Reviewers and everyday buyers alike were quick to flag the Kragg as a killer travel shoe.

Late 2024 saw an Insulated version drop for cold-weather belaying, with PrimaLoft Gold insulation and an Aerogel insole, but the collapsible heel was sacrificed for warmth.

The Revision That Makes the Shoe

The revised Kragg tightens up the things that needed attention. The collapsible heel has been rebuilt using an engineered knit construction with an integrated pull tab — making slip-on and slip-off noticeably more intuitive.

The jacquard-woven upper is also new here, swapping in for the previous Spacermesh to improve both durability and airflow. There’s also an improved stretch-knit runway running down the upper to make entry smoother overall. Underfoot, the INSITE PU drop-in midsole gives you cushioning and stability on the trail (or sidewalk), sitting above the tried-and-true Vibram Megagrip outsole with 2mm lugs optimized for mixed surfaces. The stack sits at 24mm at the heel, dropping to 17mm at the forefoot.

New colorways add Void/Black and Sea Salt/Sea Salt to all-black and Moondrop for the men’s lineup.
