In 1972, the iconic German car company launched the namesake Porche Design in order to give Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, designer of the 911, a chance to strut his stuff on a canvas other than an automobile. This year, the studio is celebrating its 50th anniversary in a big way, releasing commemorative editions of sunglasses, headphones, luggage, colognes, watches, and even cars.
The brand’s latest endeavor is slated to be its marquee release of this exceptional year. Auctioned off through Sotheby’s this December are a one-off edition of a 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa and a matching chronograph (also one-of-a-kind). This very special vehicle was announced a few months ago and has been sitting in the Porsche Museum ever since. Fully restored from 1972, this example has been outfitted with a black livery and interior seats that utilize the original fabric with a houndstooth print in black and gray. Special “50th Anniversary” denotations have also been given to the dashboard and seats.
Similar to the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition, the new Chronograph 1 – 911 S 2.4 Targa harkens back to the legendary timepiece and car that were released the same year as the studio’s launch. For this new one-off edition, the watch has been given some unique design details, such as the caseback made to look like the historic Fuchsfelge wheels of the namesake car, as well as an engraving with the vehicle’s VIN.
This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime offering by Porsche Design. The one-off Targa and Chronograph will be made available for New York Luxury Week this December through Sotheby’s auction house.
