The Hummer EV is many things. But one thing the 9,000-pound, crab-walking EV has never been is subtle. So when GMC says it built a mid-size Hummer, we were a built skeptical to say the least.
But that’s exactly what rolled out of GM’s newly reopened Advanced Design studio right down the street from us in Pasadena. Meet the Hummer X SUV and Hummer X Pickup, a pair of concepts that keep the brand’s signature swagger while leaving a healthy chunk of the bulk behind.

A Hummer That Plays in the Wrangler’s Sandbox
GM hasn’t fielded a real Jeep Wrangler rival since the K5 Blazer and GMC Jimmy rode off in the ’90s, so watching it point a Hummer at that fight feels like a statement in itself. It also makes sense: the full-size Hummer EVs have been slower sellers. So much that GM has paused production, so a leaner, cheaper take is arguably overdue.

At 188.3 inches long on a 116-inch wheelbase, the X SUV lands almost dead-on the four-door Wrangler’s length and the Bronco’s wheelbase. The Pickup stretches to 207.3 inches, slotting it next to the Chevy Colorado and Jeep Gladiator rather than the production Hummer’s usual XXL zip code. The SUV even gets a removable canopy and a tailgate-mounted spare, some welcomed trail-rig flourishes the big Hummer never bothered with.

Built to Climb, Not Just Pose
The SUV rides on 37-inch Goodyears, clears 13.2 inches of air, and posts a pretty absurd 44-degree approach and 46-degree departure angle.
The Pickup drops to 35-inch rubber with slightly tamer numbers, but both sit on beadlock-capable wheels with Multimatic shocks, removable fender flares, and heavy underbody armor guarding the battery. Stubby overhangs at both ends round things out.

Concept-Car Catnip (and the Catch)
Being a concept, the X duo is definitely getting the fantasy treatment here. There’s a scout drone that flies up the trail, hunts for obstacles, and docks itself when the job’s done, plus stackable cabin displays you can add or subtract depending on the day.

Roughly 57 percent of each vehicle is built with a metal 3D-printing process GM calls FLEX FAB, and bits like the seatbacks are made from chopped-up recycled car fascias that snap in instead of relying on glue.
GMC insists neither concept is headed for production. For now, the smaller Hummer we actually like will stay parked in the “what if” file.

Recap
2026 GMC Hummer X Concept
GMC reimagines the Hummer as a mid-size, Wrangler-fighting off-roader with a trail drone and 37-inch tires. The catch: it isn’t building it.
