Though probably best known for his “Eroded” fictitious archaeology pieces, artist Daniel Arsham has a well-documented proclivity for vintage Porsche 911s. And after previously joining forces with the Stuttgart firm to create a custom 930 Turbo daily driver, the NYC-based Cleveland native has now taken on his most ambitious vehicle project to date, partnering with luxury Italian label Stone Island to deliver a bespoke 911 Safari build and an accompanying Unimog support rig.
Arsham’s Safari build began life as a 1986 911 Turbo, though has since been extensively modified inside and out. Built by Leh Keen of The Keen Project — a renowned 911 tuner — the 930 specimen has been treated to an upgraded, lifted suspension package, Fuchs wheels shod in all-terrain tires, a hood-mounted light-pod with bespoke-branded covers, a custom roof rack, one-off steel bumpers fore and aft, bespoke mudflaps decorated in Stone Island and Arsham branding, custom “Safari” badges, and a full-length skid plate. The exterior of the Porsche has also been treated to a dark drab green livery while the interior has been reupholstered using Stone Island’s signature moleskin fabric which has been bestowed with a laser-etched Arsham Studio monogram motif.
Alongside the 911 Safari build, Arsham’s collab with Stone Island has also resulted in the customization of a Unimog U404 that’s been gifted the same dark green livery and bespoke moleskin cabin. Taking inspiration from retro rally racers, the Unimog was designed to act as a support, chase, and recovery vehicle for the 930. In addition to the two off-roaders, Stone Island and Arsham have also whipped up a one-off clothing capsule for the Safari Project that’s made from the same materials used to upholster the 930 and comprised of a set of overalls, a jacket, a shirt, a pair of pants, and a matching set of bags.
Now complete, the Porsche 911 Turbo and Unimog 404 builds will go on display at Stone Island’s La Brea location on March 19th and 20th. Tomorrow, the pair will also be debuting a ten-minute Arsham-narrated short film about the building and restoration of the two all-terrain vehicles.
