In the realm of car collecting, having a well-known and well-versed collection can transcend a casual fan to an authority. There are many car collectors in the space who have an envious assemblage of classic vehicles, and one of them is director and producer extraordinaire, Richard Donner. The late director helmed mega-hits such as The Goonies, the original Superman movies, Lethal Weapon, and Scrooged, just to name a few. While Donner unfortunately passed away last year, his legacy lives on in his films and wonderful car collection, which is going on auction at Gooding & Company next week.
Richard Donner’s car collection is part of Gooding & Company’s Geared Online Scottsdale Edition event and includes ten cars, each more desirable than the next. Arguably the keystone of the collection is Donner’s 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet, which is one of the only 588 examples built in 1965. This rare model has a more primitive engine that had an output of just 95HP, but its beauty, rarity, and gorgeous design make it highly collectible.
Not to be overlooked, the collection also includes an example of the always iconic 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus, which boasts a 23-window configuration, red and white two-tone livery, a popout Safari windshield, and a retractable canvas sunroof. Rounding out the late director’s fleet are a 1949 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon, a 1958 Continental Mark III Convertible, a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible, a 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Saloon, a 1962 Crown Imperial Convertible, a 1939 Ford Deluxe Four-Door Phaeton Convertible, and a 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe Cabriolet.
This wonderful crop of “Super” cars goes for auction through Gooding & Company on Monday, January 24 with estimates as low as $15,000.
