Auction Block: 1987 Buick GNX with 55 Miles

Buick’s design language in the 1980s always seems to go understated. After debuting the ever-popular Grand National in 1982, made to celebrate its success at NASCAR’s Winston Cup Grand National Series where it took home the Manufacturers Cup two years in a row, Buick ran the line for six years. To celebrate the end of the series in 1987, the company partnered with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC for a single-year release of what they called the GNX (Grand National Experimental), one of the fastest and most legendary cars of the decade.

The GNX sold for nearly $30,000 at the time and saw only 547 get produced, all finished in black. Crossing the lot today at Bring a Trailer is one of these rare vehicles, which has a current bid of $190,000. Numbered 422, the car is powered by a Garret T3 turbocharged 3.8L V6, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, limited-slip differential, and dual exhaust, and putting out the factory-rated 276hp. Most spectacularly, however, is the mileage shown on the odometer. Since its original purchase, the car has only accumulated 55 miles in total, making it almost a NOS GNX.

This GNX was with the original owner until 2016 and was acquired by the current seller in 2018. One of the most pristine examples of this Buick that you will ever find, this boxy two-door sports a two-tone cloth upholstery of black and sand gray in the interior and sits atop 16-inch cross-lace wheels. Specific to the GNX are the heat-extracting fender vents, composite wheel arch flares, and three-piece rear spoiler.

Hailing from Massachusetts, the car is currently being auctioned off by Bring a Trailer where bidding has reached $190,000 with four days left on the sale at time of writing.
