In late 2022, after more-than-half-a-decade of development, Pagani finally pulled the cover off of its worthy successor to the Huayra with the all-new Utopia hypercar. And after selling the allocations for all 99 examples, Pagani has now pulled the cover off of its flagship hypercar’s new droptop counterpart in the form of the Pagani Utopia Roadster.
The Basics
Unveiled during Monterey Car Week, the convertible version of the Utopia is constructed around the same advanced Carbo-Titanium HP62 2 and Carbo-Triax HP62 monocoque frame as the non-Roadster-spec. It also carries over the hard-top’s forged aluminum independent double wishbone suspension and electronically-controlled shocks. The Utopia Roadster also shares the regular Utopia’s full suite of exposed carbon bodywork.
Powertrain
The Utopia Roadster is kicked along by the same 6.0-liter V12 engine as the hard-top model. Fitted with a twin turbocharger setup, the V12 comes mated to aPagani By Xtrac 7-Speed transmission that was custom-developed specially for the Utopia project. Insanely powerful, the engine is built by hand by AMG to Pagani’s exact specifications.
Power & Performance
The droptop hypercar’s twin-turbo 12-banger manages to crank out a collective 864hp and 811.3ft-lbs of torque — giving it the same output as the hardtop. These mind-blowing power figures enable the vehicle to reach 60mph from a standstill in 2.4 seconds, and achieve a top speed that’s electronically limited to 217mph.
What Makes It Special
Engineering convertible versions of high-performance vehicles is often a pretty tricky endeavor, as the lack of a hard roof can hugely compromise stability and frame rigidity, plus droptops typically tip the scales at quite a bit more than their hardtop counterparts. So, in addition to its otherworldly power figures, acceleration, and top speed, a massive part of what makes the Utopia Roadster so special is the fact it weighs in at 2,822lbs — the exact same weight as the hardtop model, down to the pound. This is practically unheard-of in the automotive world. What’s more, unlike the original hardtop, the new Roadster-spec can also now be optioned with an available Sport Pack that further improves the hypercar’s already world-class capabilities.
