We’re not going to pretend for a second that an electric M3 isn’t a touchy subject. The nameplate has been the benchmark sports sedan for 40 years now, dating all the way back to the E30’s arrival in 1986, and it’s built that reputation entirely on combustion.
So when BMW rolled the M Concept Neue Klasse out at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it knew exactly what it was doing. This is the closest look yet at the battery-powered M3 arriving in 2027, and BMW even went as far as to park it right next to an E30 for the photos.

Born at La Sarthe
Built on the same Neue Klasse platform as the upcoming i3 sedan, the concept wears a new Monza Red paint job over dramatically flared arches, a reinterpreted shark nose, and a proper ducktail spoiler out back. The triple-element “trimaran” bumpers take their inspiration from high-speed sailing boats, of all things.

The motorsport references run deep here. The new M Yellow Lights pull directly from the brand’s M Hybrid V8 endurance racer, and the splitter, hood vent, and diffuser are all formed from natural-fiber composites that are said to cut production emissions by up to 40% versus traditional carbon fiber.

Four Motors, One Supercomputer
Now, onto the hardware. Underneath sits BMW’s new M eDrive setup. This incudes four electric motors (one per wheel) fed by an 800-volt architecture and an M-specific battery packing more than 100 kWh of usable energy.

Unfortunately, BMW won’t quote an output figure yet, but reports peg the production car anywhere from 800 to an absurd 1,000 horsepower. Managing all of it is the “Heart of Joy” central computer, which controls power and braking at each individual wheel.

Hedging Their Bets
Inside, you’ll find four individual bucket seats trimmed in Bathurst Blue and Berry Red Merino leather, five-point harnesses, and a roll bar wrapped in black nubuck leather, a first for any M car.

And for the purists already drafting angry forum posts, take a deep breath. BMW has confirmed a gasoline-powered M3 successor is still coming around 2028, meaning the two will be sold side by side. The market will get to settle this one.
