For a brand as iconic and ultra-luxury as Maserati, it’s surprising that it doesn’t have a stout lineup of supercars in its portfolio. Sure, its cars have fantastic performance specifications to coincide with its gorgeous design language, but as far as high-performing cars go, the Italian-based automaker hasn’t seemed too invested in pushing the envelope. In fact, it wasn’t until 2020 when Maserati shocked the world and released its first supercar in nearly 20 years, the ultra-popular MC20. Capitalizing on the success of the first MC20, Maserati unveiled a new prototype of the MC20 that promises to push the supercar’s performance even further.
Dubbed a “first of its kind,” Maserati debuted an early prototype of the new MC20 with a cloud-patterned camouflage. Said camouflage is an extension of a “play of clouds” theme, which coincides with Maserati’s creative choice of making this next iteration a convertible. The new MC20 will feature a construction made of carbon fiber and composite materials to support its convertible body and retain its ultra-lightweight build. While the prototype shows off the new silhouette, it’s pretty apparent that the next MC20 has a lot of the same design elements as its predecessor – sporting the same smooth lines and sleek curvature that made us fall in love with the original. Adding a convertible feature to it just makes it that much easier to enjoy this gorgeous supercar.
While Maserati didn’t mention anything regarding the performance specifications of the new model, we can expect it to have a similar setup as the original, which boasted F1-derived technologies, a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, 630-HP, and 538 lb-ft of torque. Maserati also teased that it will be developing an all-electric version of the MC20 in the future, although it did not specify when that would happen. We can most likely expect to see the convertible MC20 in 2022.
