Studio Underd0g has spent five years proving that serious watchmaking and a sense of humor aren’t mutually exclusive. The brand has built a cult following on watermelon-dialed chronographs assembled in Great Britain.
Earlier this summer, the Studio Underd0g rolled out the second generation of its 02SERIES field watch with a slimmer case and a beefier movement. Now that platform gets its first special edition, and it glows like a nuclear accident. Say hello to the 02SERIES Mantis.
Camouflage, Reconsidered
The actual praying mantis is known for blending into foliage, but Studio Underd0g clearly skimmed that part of the nature documentary, because this thing does quite the opposite.
By day, the dial runs a gradient from lime to deeper green, with yellow-filled hands floating over the brand’s signature layered construction. Underneath the 1mm tinted sapphire top disc sits a brass base coated in seven layers of X1 GL C3 Super-LumiNova. Seven. Once the lights go out, the entire dial transforms into a uniform neon green.
Flip it over and the screw-down caseback wears an engraved jellyfish, the bioluminescent muse behind every 02SERIES dial.
The Serious Bits
All that glow rides on the Gen2 upgrade package. The 316L steel case measures 37.5mm across, 46mm lug to lug, and a trim 11.5mm thick, with 100m of water resistance for added everyday convenience.
Inside beats a Sellita SW200-2 M, a manual-wind Swiss caliber rated to -7/+7 seconds per day with a generous 63-hour power reserve. A forest green washed suede strap from The Strap Tailor keeps the whole affair cohesive, tapering from 18mm to 16mm.
A 9-Hour Shelf Life
The Mantis is a limited edition. but rather than limit the number of units available, the brand decided to create a limited time window for purchasing. On September 1st, orders open at underd0g.com for exactly nine hours (3pm to midnight BST, 10am to 7pm ET), and every order placed inside that window gets made for customers.
No lottery, no bots, and hopefully no flipping frenzy. When the clock strikes midnight, the Mantis is discontinued for good. A small allocation is also reserved for anyone booking an in-person visit to the brand’s D0ghouse.
