Back in 2015, Tudor did something pretty impactful with a watch that few people paid much attention to. The North Flag was the first Tudor to carry an in-house movement, and is really the model that kicked off the brand’s entire modern manufacture era. And how was the watch repaid? Try six years of lukewarm sales and a quiet discontinuation in 2021, while the Black Bay hogged every ounce of the spotlight.
Well, all of that is about to change. Tudor is running it back, and the new Northflag (one word this time) shows up slimmer, brighter, and packing a legitimate GMT.
Ranger II Roots
Like the original, the Northflag pulls its DNA from the 1973 Ranger II, which is one of the stranger chapters in Tudor’s back catalog. The angular case, integrated steel bracelet, and high-contrast black dial with oversized Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 all carry over, along with those signature hits of yellow.
It’s a design that never looked like anything else Tudor makes. Many enthusiasts considered that to be the problem the first time around, but you could easily make the argument that it’s now the appeal in today’s overcrowded landscape.
Slimmer, Sharper, Brighter
The case still measures 40mm, but Tudor shaved the thickness down to 12.7mm and pulled the lug-to-lug in to a tidy 48.8mm. A thinner fixed bezel and box-shaped sapphire crystal clean up the profile even further.
The hour markers are now cut from solid blocks of luminous ceramic, and the bracelet finally gets Tudor’s excellent T-Fit clasp for tool-free micro-adjustments.
A Proper Traveler’s GMT
The old power reserve indicator is gone, replaced by a yellow 24-hour hand reading against an angled rehaut. Driving it is the caliber MT5652-U, the same METAS-certified Master Chronometer found in the Pelagos FXD GMT.
This is also a true traveler’s GMT, meaning the local hour hand jumps independently while the movement keeps running. The only real concession is a 65-hour power reserve, which is down slightly from the original’s 70.
