While some other watch brands use the annual Watches and Wonders show in Geneva to debut new innovations, long-awaited reissues, or brand-new collections, Rolex tends to make just minimal, if not still fun, changes to their already-existing lineup. We’ve already seen some notable new releases from the Swiss icon at this year’s show, be it the 18k gold version of its chunky 3,000m Deepsea diver or a new black-and-gray bezel color for its GMT-Master II. Last year at Watches and Wonders, Rolex did actually introduce a brand-new model: the 1908 Perpetual, named after the year the brand took the Rolex name. Now, the luxury watch is now getting a new platinum edition (ref. 52506).
While last year’s inaugural 1908 Perpetual models were given white and yellow gold cases, the platinum material brings a whole new look to the line. Like previous iterations, the new addition features a 39mm case size at 9.5mm thick, along with the fixed bezel with fluted edges. As opposed to the flat-textured black and white dials of the previous models, this one pairs the platinum color with a light blue color with a beautiful “rice grain” guilloché pattern. The small seconds subdial at the bottom, however, features a brushed pattern. You’ll also notice the aperture on the hour hand, which is a signature of this model.
Seen through the caseback (rare for Rolex), the watch is powered by the watchmaker’s in-house Caliber 7140 automatic movement with 66 hours of power reserve and featuring a gold rotor. The watch also boasts 50m of water resistance due to the pull-out crown, 18k white gold hands, and a leather band with Rolex’s Dualclasp system.
