Gérald Genta’s greatest hits get recited like scripture in the watch community, and it includes both the Royal Oak in 1972 and the Nautilus in 1976. But that same year, the designer penned a third integrated sports watch that history seems to have all but forgotten. We’re talking about the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832. It was IWC’s swing at the genre, and it landed with a commercial thud, with fewer than 600 examples ever produced.
Now, half a century later, IWC is finally giving its slow burner the spotlight with the new Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary limited editions.
From Sales Flop to Certified Grail
It’s hard to overstate how poorly the Ingenieur SL performed at launch. While the Royal Oak was busy saving Audemars Piguet, IWC produced just 598 examples of Genta’s rounded, screw-bezel design between 1976 and 1983 before pulling the plug.
Funny how time works, though. Those same unloved references now rank among the most collectible watches IWC has ever made, and when the brand relaunched the Ingenieur in 2023, it went straight back to the SL for its blueprint.
Trading the Grid for Brushed Silver
The modern Ingenieur is known for its structured grid dial, but these anniversary editions look elsewhere. IWC dug up a rare SL variant that wore a brushed, silver-plated dial and recreated that finish here, paired with rhodium-plated hands and applied markers filled with Super-LumiNova.
The lightning bolt that normally sits beneath the Ingenieur script has been swapped for a small “50,” a nice, subtle wink at the milestone.
Same Family, Different Guts
Offered in 40mm and 35mm sizes with 1,150 pieces apiece, the two references are less identical twins and more siblings. The 40mm runs IWC’s in-house 32111 caliber with a frankly absurd 120-hour power reserve, plus a soft-iron inner case (just like the original SL) that necessitates a closed caseback.
The 35mm makes do with the 47110 caliber and a more pedestrian 42 hours of reserve, but it gets a sapphire caseback showing off a gold-plated rotor as a consolation prize. Both wear the signature five-screw bezel on an integrated steel bracelet, and both are rated to 100m.
