While Patek Philippe has dominated headlines in recent years thanks to the insane popularity of its stainless steel 5711 Nautilus — including the hypebeast-y Tiffany Blue version — the Maison didn’t become the most esteemed Swiss luxury watchmaker because of its simple sports watches. Rather, it’s Patek’s complicated movements that have always been the star of the show for the brand, and it’s just revealed an impressive brand-new caliber.
Debuting shortly after the conclusion of the Watches and Wonders Geneva trade show is the Patek Philippe 5470P, a decidedly sporty yet high-end monopusher chronograph that’s powered by a first-of-its-kind movement from Patek. The watch’s 41mm platinum case houses the brand-new caliber CH 29-535 PS 1/10 — the first wristwatch movement from Patek to ever feature a 1/10th of a second chronograph function. The high-beat, 36,000 bph movement actually incorporates two separate chronograph complications, both operated via the monopusher at 2 o’clock.
Pushing the monopusher starts both center-stacked chronograph seconds hands simultaneously. The silver one operates like a normal chronograph, while the red hand flies around the dial at a rate of one revolution per 12 seconds, allowing for 1/10th of a second measurements. The complex movement is accompanied by six patents, and while we’ve seen 1/10th of a second chronographs before — notably from Zenith — we don’t think we’ve never seen one that also incorporates a traditional chronograph hand too.
Rounding out this impressive specimen is a deep blue dial with applied white gold Breguet numerals and a bicompax layout showing running seconds and a 30-minute chronograph counter.
