Rolex builds some outrageous gem-set Daytonas every single year, but the general public just doesn’t usually get to see them. These off-catalogue creations tend to fly under the radar, and only get talked about in collector circles and spotted on the occasional celebrity wrist. But the Crown itself never acknowledges their existence, let alone publishes their spec sheets.
That silence just ended in spectacular fashion, because Rolex has plastered four one-of-a-kind stone-dial stunners across its own website ahead of a charity auction, collectively known as the Cosmograph Daytona “The Four Seasons.”
Breaking Character for a Good Cause
So what got the most tight-lipped brand in watchmaking to break character? Two of its most famous ambassadors, for starters. Roger Federer and Leonardo DiCaprio teamed up with Rolex on the project, and all four watches will cross the block at Phillips in London on September 28.
Every cent raised goes to the Federer Foundation, which supports children’s education in Switzerland and Southern Africa, and Re:wild, the conservation outfit DiCaprio co-founded. And considering that the last time Phillips and a headline Daytona shared a room, Paul Newman’s ref. 6239 hammered for $17.8 million, the charities should make out just fine.
A Daytona for Every Season
Each watch interprets a season through precious metal and natural stone. “Spring” pairs a white gold case with a green chrysoprase dial, lepidolite counters, and purple sapphires. “Summer” goes full vacation mode with Everose gold, a turquoise dial, and heart of ruby subdials ringed by pink sapphires.
“Autumn” brings yellow gold and an earthy mookaite dial with green tourmaline accents, while “Winter,” is covered in 950 platinum with a color-shifting blue opal dial, lapis lazuli counters, and a bezel of sapphires fading from blue to fuchsia. All four wear 54 brilliant-cut diamonds across their lugs and crown guards.
