Panerai has never been a brand that does things halfway, and the Submersible Navy SEALs Afniotech Experience PAM01089 might be the most Panerai thing Panerai has ever done. A 47mm dive watch built from a metal so rare and so difficult to machine that the entire production run amounts to 35 pieces, paired with a three-day SEAL training experience in Florida that’s either the dream of a lifetime or a $99,500 reminder that you should’ve stayed in better shape. Either way, it’s hard not to respect the swing.

Welcome to Hafnium
The case is made from Afniotech, Panerai’s proprietary alloy that’s 95% hafnium. If you’ve never heard of hafnium, that’s because it almost never leaves the worlds of nuclear reactor control rods, satellite components, and aerospace shielding. Global production sits at just a few dozen tons per year as it’s only found tucked inside zirconium ore, and separating the two is notoriously difficult because they’re chemically near-twins.
Now, turning all of that into a Swiss watch case is, to put it lightly, a logistical nightmare. The issue is hafnium is roughly 70% heavier than stainless steel and brutally tough on cutting tools. This means five-axis machining, constant tool swaps, and human supervision is required around the clock while working with the material.
The juice is definitely worth the squeeze though, and the finished case has a cool silver-blue tone that feels quite unique compared to more traditional steel or titanium. And it’s finished off with a sandblasted treatment that basically kills any underwater glare.

Built Like a Submarine, Wears Like One Too
We’re not going to pretend for a second that this is a daily-driver dive watch because it’s absolutely not. At 47mm wide, 18.5mm thick, and 200 grams on the wrist, the PAM01089 is an absolute beast of a timepiece – although that’s quite the norm for Panerai.
But, that’s the cost of a 1,000-meter water resistance rating, and individual pressure testing that pushes every case 25% past its stated depth before it ever ships to the customer.
The dial leans hard into the SEALs aesthetic. The sub-seconds at 9 o’clock get a rifle-scope crosshair treatment, the date sits at 3, and the hands are semi-skeletonized with Super-LumiNova X2 fill, which includes green across most of the dial with blue on the bezel pip and the minute hand for diving orientation.
There’s also a yellow GMT hand for the second time zone, though it’s worth flagging that Panerai didn’t include a 24-hour indicator, so AM/PM tracking on that second zone is more vibes than precision. Powering it all is the in-house P.9010/GMT automatic with a 72-hour reserve from twin barrels.

The Florida Footnote
While the watch itself is rad on its own, the actual cherry on top might be the experience itself. In March 2027, all 35 owners head to Florida for three days of SEAL-led training built around endurance and teamwork. It’s a really clever way to stress-test both the watch and its wearer in the kind of environment Panerai keeps invoking in its marketing.
