Panerai Revives a Rare 1960s Prototype for Its Florence Boutique’s 100th Birthday

Panerai may have Swiss Made printed on their dials, but the brand’s soul actually has a Florentine street address. The family’s shop at Piazza San Giovanni opened back in 1926 under the name Orologeria Svizzera, selling and servicing watches right next to the iconic Duomo for decades before the Luminor even existed.

That storefront turns 100 this year, and Panerai is marking the milestone the only appropriate way, with a pair of limited editions called the Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni.

A Prototype Comes Out of Hiding

Both references trace their design back to a rare 1960s prototype of the ref. 6152/1, a one-off that now lives in a private collection and wears “Panerai Firenze” on its dial in place of the usual branding. That tone-on-tone inscription returns here at 12 o’clock, and it’s about as subtle as lume-filled lettering gets.

The vintage 47mm footprint has been reworked into a far more wearable 44mm cushion case, complete with a domed sapphire crystal standing in for the Perspex of the era. The circular-brushed sandwich dials glow with green Super-LumiNova, and there’s no date window in sight.

Grooves Divers Could Actually Grip

Now for the detail collectors will fixate on. The Platinumtech PAM01734 is the first production Panerai ever to carry the prototype’s grooved crown-protecting bridge, with parallel channels cut into the inner faces so gloved frogmen could actually get a good grip on the crown.

That precious version pairs its hardened 95% platinum case with a green dial, gold-toned pencil hands, a sapphire display back, and 100m of water resistance. The steel PAM01794 plays the tool watch instead, matching an anthracite dial and heat-blued hands to a closed caseback engraved with the boutique’s facade, plus a proper 300m rating.

Eight Days Between Winds

Both run Panerai’s hand-wound P.5000, whose twin barrels stack up an absurd 192 hours of power reserve (that’s 8 full days). The logic dates to the 1950s, when fewer trips to the crown meant fewer chances for water to sneak past the seals.

Each watch ships on a Tuscan calf strap hot-stamped with the Florentine lily, alongside a spare rubber strap and a mahogany box bearing a plaque of the boutique’s entrance. It’s proper hometown pride, right down to that packaging.
