Each year, seemingly countless brands and even watchmakers roll out their special-edition products in conjunction with the Chinese Lunar New Year. And with 2025 being the Year of the Snake, expect to see a good deal of serpentine-themed items.

While we don’t typically cover the array of Chinese New Year gear due to the sheer saturation of these releases, we couldn’t help ourselves when it came to the latest Oris ProPilot X model. Let’s take a look…

The Kings of Themed Watches?

Maybe it’s the visage of the snake or Oris’ knack for implementing theming into their timepieces (see their Kermit the Frog ProPilot from a couple of years ago) but the Swiss brand’s adroit technical skill never takes a backseat no matter what the case is.

For this Year of the Snake edition of the ProPilot X, Oris employs their Calibre 115 variant, which is a skeleton watch made to exclusively show off the namesake movement. Typically brands will make an openworked watch after a movement already exists but the Calibre 115 was made with the express purpose of being displayed under the dial.

Oris ProPilot X Year of the Snake Basics

At first, the Year of the Snake edition of the ProPilot X might just look like a green version of the standard skeleton watch but there’s much more to it than that, although not too much — Oris loves to understate many of its theming. But take a closer glimpse at the 10-day power reserve indicator, where the golden hand not only beautifully contrasts with the green but is in the shape of a snake tongue.

Like previous versions, this version sports a 44mm titanium case with a brushed finish and a signature fluted bezel and crown. The dial features the aforementioned power reserve scale, as well as a running seconds subdial in the bottom left corner. While this is a watch that nods to the Chinese zodiac animal, it can also be worn without any campiness. The subtle design changes are sparse and classy.

Underneath the green dial, you can catch a good glimpse at the Calibre 115, a hand-wound movement with the aforementioned 10-day power reserve and a gold-coated wheel train. A large exhibition window on the caseback reveals the movement from the other side. Water resistant to 100m, the watch is adorned with a titanium bracelet with a folding clasp.
