As one of the first watchmakers to come out with a pilot’s watch back in 1908, Longines has always been a favorite of aviators. The Swiss brand’s blockbuster Spirit collection added a “true” GMT a couple of months ago with the addition of the Zulu Time, and now, Longines has added a fun splash of color, a lighter material, and a more streamlined look to its Spirit Chronograph with the new Pioneer Edition.
The Pioneer Edition may retain certain features from a typical Spirit Chronograph, such as the COSC-certified L688.4 automatic movement with silicon balance spring and the 42mm case size, but the design here boasts more than just a change or two. For one, the case trades in the stainless steel material for grade 5 titanium, which gives the watch a lighter feel and a sportier aesthetic. The second crown has also been removed, along with the date complication, for a more accessible and simplified look.
Adding to the Pioneer Edition’s sportier look is the matte black dial and a matching black synthetic strap with bright green stitching. The strap’s stitching matches the watch’s true standout feature: those striking neon green hands (also titanium) and Arabic numerals, the color of which is further enhanced by the addition of Super-LumiNova. Like the standard Spirit Chronograph, this new version also features the same 100m water resistance and tri-compax layout.
With the words “Pioneer Edition” engraved onto the case back, this special addition to the Spirit collection will be available soon from Longines’ online boutique and is priced at $3,900.
