G-SHOCK might be known for its stylish, rugged timepieces with low price points but the Japanese watchmaker isn’t afraid to put out some more premium options every once in a while too, especially in its top-shelf MR-G series. Case in point, it just debuted a $4,000+ version of its ever-popular 2100 model, but with brushed titanium instead of resin or stainless steel.

Why Titanium?

Considering the hallmark case material of a typical G-SHOCK being the lightweight resin used for most of their models, titanium is a way to get that same lightweight quality with metal construction. We’ve seen a bunch of Full Metal variations on classic models, which utilize stainless steel instead of resin, but these have also made the watches rather heavy in comparison. G-SHOCKs tend to be pretty wide as well, so it all adds up.

Titanium is a popular watch case material for its resistance to corrosion and the fact that it’s super lightweight — at about 40% the weight of its stainless steel counterparts on average. In fact, the 2100 in titanium is over 1.5oz lighter than the Full Metal versions. The metal also has a rather unique visual character, which the Casio sublabel has opted to brush finish with this new CasiOak model.

Using a Ti64 titanium alloy, G-SHOCK knows that titanium isn’t as inherently scratch-resistant as, say, steel or ceramic. And so, it topped the case with a platinum-looking alloy called COBARION, which is said to be four times harder than pure titanium. Meanwhile, the bracelet utilizes DAT55G titanium alloy known for its hardness and pliability. All of these are finished with titanium carbide for additional scratch resistance.

G-SHOCK MRG-B2100 Titanium Basics

The rest of the 2100 is nothing we haven’t seen before. Measuring 49.5mm × 44.4mm, the case is designed to be shock resistant thanks to its 27-component bezel construction known as its proprietary Multi-Guard structure, along with 200m of water resistance in tow.

Inspired by kigumi, the traditional Japanese woodworking art, the dial conveys some serious intricacies with its weave-like dial pattern. Underneath the visible grooves are openings that house tiny Tough Solar panels that power this watch. Illuminated by a button-activated LED glow across the dial at night, the time is radio-calibrated for perfect accuracy, while the watch itself can be paired via Bluetooth to your smartphone.
