2024 is a big year for Citizen. Not only is the Japanese watchmaker celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first watch to bear its brand’s name but it’s also honoring the 35th anniversary (not as big of a jubilee, we know) of the iconic Promaster line. Since debuting in 1989, the Promaster has become a staple of the adventure watch category. Already this year, we’ve seen a special Godzilla Edition of the watch and the first mechanical GMT version, which was introduced as part of the Promaster Sky category. This month’s release keeps things on Land with the debut of the Promaster Eco-Drive Combination Watch.

Essentially an update of the Promaster Land watch, the new model sports a hybrid function with both analog and digital displays. At the top of the dial, there’s a high-definition MIP display (previously an LCD display) that’s capable of operating as a world time function, a calendar, a chronograph, or an alarm, adjusted and operated with a set of push buttons and crowns on the outside of the case. Shock resistant and water resistant to 200m, the 43.9mm field watch reads the current time in an analog display and features two subdials: one for power reserve and one for indicating which function you’re currently using.

Newly developed for the Promaster Eco-Drive Combination Watch, the Cal. U822 is a solar Eco-Drive movement. The Eco-Drive is Citizen’s own tech which, unlike standard solar movements that only charge up on sunlight, can use any light source for keeping the hands ticking. Favoring outdoor visibility, the MIP display reads well in the sunlight and a dual-colored lume and is designed to be read more clearly at night.
