Cartier’s Unorthodox Crash Watch Makes a Return for the First Time in 8 Years

Even if you are the most cursory watch enthusiast, chances are you’ve seen the Cartier Crash. Purportedly inspired by a damaged Baignoire model a customer brought in for repair after a car accident, the Crash has persisted as one of the most recognizable albeit elusive timepieces in history.

Now, as part of its Privé collection unveiled at Watches & Wonders this week, Cartier has brought back the Crash for the first time in nearly a decade, and it’s been openworked with a platinum case.

A Shape With a Story

The Crash was born in 1967 out of Cartier’s London boutique on Bond Street under Jean-Jacques Cartier, who, alongside designer Rupert Emmerson, essentially “pinched” the Maxi Oval case into something that looked structurally compromised on purpose. Only about a dozen of those original London pieces were ever made. The mythology around it only deepened from there, with some attributing its melted silhouette to Salvador Dalí’s draping clocks in The Persistence of Memory, although that inspiration may have only been subconscious and Cartier has long denied that connection.

The Crash came back in platinum in 1980, then in smaller yellow gold versions in 1991, and made a horological statement in 2015 with the shaped calibre 9618 MC, which was around the last time the Crash was skeletonized. This year’s release, included as part of the tenth edition of the Privé program, might be the Crash’s most technically ambitious incarnation yet.

The Movement Is the Dial

Where the 2015 version used its skeletonized movement to approximate a conventional dial layout, the new Crash Skeleton dispenses with that pretense entirely. The new Manufacture 1967 MC caliber, a 142-component manual-winding shaped movement built specifically for this case’s impossible geometry, makes the bridges the architecture. They run from V to I along the wider left side, literally forming the Roman numerals rather than simply sitting beneath them. Over on the cramped right side, a cluster of contorted bridges carries a hand-hammered tremblage finish on both faces, adding texture to an already visually intense movement. That hammering is done by hand, and each watch requires close to two hours of that decorative work alone.

The 950 platinum case measures 45.34mm long, 25.18mm wide, and 12.97mm tall, sitting slightly narrower than the 2015 edition and closer in proportion to the original London Crash. The ruby cabochon in the crown tilts downward, emphasizing the concave indent on the right side of the case. The face is given blued-steel hands, while a semi-matte burgundy alligator strap rounds out the color palette.
