Brew Celebrates 10 Years With Their First Hand-Wound Swiss Movement

Microbrand success stories are not often as impressive as Brew Watches. What began as Jonathan Ferrer’s espresso-inspired Kickstarter project in 2015 has now evolved into one of the most distinctive design aesthetics in independent watchmaking. Now celebrating its first decade, the New York-based watchmaker has unveiled its most sophisticated timepiece to date with a Swiss-made manually-wound version of its Metric model. This sleek interpretation of the brand’s signature watch also slims down to an 8.5-mm case thickness to make it the thinnest Brew ever produced.

Hand-Cranked Evolution

The Metric line has proven remarkably versatile since its 2021 debut, evolving from mecha-quartz chronographs to Seiko automatic movements, and now receiving its first hand-wound caliber for its 10th anniversary.

Visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, the Sellita SW210-1 b manual movement brings a certain horological elevation to the Metric lineup. There’s something undeniably satisfying about the daily connection with your timepiece that comes from hand-winding, especially when paired with Brew’s newly designed textured crown that offers actual audible clicks during operation.

Coffee-Fueled Design

While the manual movement is perhaps the lede, the new refined case proportions might prove to be a standout feature for fans of the brand. At just 8.5mm thick, this 36mm stainless steel cushion case maintains the retro 1970s aesthetic that we love but gets a bit sleeker profile than previous iterations. Available in both Blue and Grey dial variants, the facelift continues with new “mountain-top” hour markers that intend to capture and reflect light more dramatically compared to the more traditional markers from before, adding visual depth to both colorways.

Luckily, the popular integrated bracelet design remains intact, though the clasp receives a notable upgrade with a polished three-dimensional coffee bean logo (previous versions featured an engraved version of the bean). Micro-adjustments are included too, though it’s not of the tool-free nature.

Both dial options showcase Brew’s evolving aesthetic maturity. The grey version (limited to 100 pieces) goes for the monochromatic look but with some nuance at play between the different shades of the color and the white second hand. Meanwhile, the blue variant (limited to just 25 pieces) continues the brand’s playful use of color with a fluorescent second hand and yellow accents marking the 25- to 35-second range at the bottom of the dial, which nods to the optimal timing for pulling a perfect espresso shot.

Grinding Higher

Frequent Brew customers will notice one other elephant in the room, as the Manual Wind pushes the Metric into a higher price bracket as well. At $875, it’s positioned significantly higher than the mecha-quartz Metric (~$400) and automatic Metric ($525) Metrics that came before it. However, a new Swiss manual movement and revised dimensions might justify the hike for faithful followers.

On the other hand, manual winding isn’t exactly ideal for those who love Brew for its inspired designs and knack for color. And some fans have already shown disappointment in the low edition size of the blue version, which has eluded many of those who have remained loyal to the company these past 10 years.
