LEGO’s Transforming Optimus Prime Set Is More than Meets the Eye

As one of the most nostalgia-inducing franchises ever, Transformers has been delivered to the public in too many forms to name. From toys and clothes to television shows and the big screen, Autobots and Decepticons have been duking it out for decades, and LEGO is choosing to admire the former’s most iconic member, rolling out a legitimately transformable model of Optimus Prime.

Staying true to its shape-shifting composition, LEGO’s model of the Autobots’ ring leader can convert from a robot to its truck form. Standing at 13.5” tall when presented in the former mode, the Optimus Prime build features 19 authentic points of articulation that mirror those found on the original Hasbro toy. It even comes equipped with all the accurate accessories, like Optimus’ ion blaster, Energon ax, jetpack, and, most importantly, the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which can be stored in the chest chamber.

The LEGO build serves as an equally cool model car when displayed in truck mode. Optimus Prime remains iconic and substantially sized in wheeled fashion, measuring over 5.5-inches high and 10.5-inches long. While you may be more familiar with the series protagonist for fighting Megatron and his crew, it’s safe to say that this is easily one of the Danish toy company’s most impressive auto models to date, too.

Whether you were a fan of the show or had all the toys lined up in your bedroom ready for battle, this build will surely take you back to your childhood. The 2-in-1 set is slated to hit LEGO’s online store for $170 on June 1.
