Canon entered the digital camera game in 1996 with the release of its PowerShot. Not only did the model line serve as a testbed for Canon’s small-body tech — including early use of the brand’s CMOS sensors, advanced image stabilization, and increasingly powerful DIGIC image processor — but it also became one of the best-selling digital cameras in the world. The PowerShot range ran the gamut of easy-to-use snapshot shooters for beginners to high-end compacts.
Canon now celebrates the 30th anniversary of the PowerShot with a limited-edition variant of the G7 X Mark III, and it’s $400 more than the standard model.

Three Decades of Point-and-Shoot Evolution
From the original PowerShot 600 with its 0.57-megapixel CCD sensor to today’s sophisticated vlogging cameras, Canon’s compact camera journey has evolved considerably over the past three decades. The G7 X Mark III itself became a viral sensation thanks to social media influencers, with Canon ramping up production multiple times just to keep up with demand. This anniversary edition capitalizes on that momentum with cosmetic refinements instead of any technical upgrades.

What’s Different (and What’s Not)
The 30th Anniversary Limited Edition sports an exclusive graphite finish that trades the standard model’s black-and-silver aesthetic for something more subdued. The front control ring features diamond knurling — a tactile upgrade that adds a premium touch to manual adjustments. Canon also puts a subtle 30th anniversary logo on the top plate.
Everything else remains identical to the 2019 G7 X Mark III. The 20.1MP Type 1 stacked CMOS sensor, DIGIC 8 processor, and that excellent 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens all carry over unchanged. You’re still getting 4K30p video, 20fps burst shooting, and the tilting 3.0-inch touchscreen that made the original such a hit with content creators.

The Extras Package
Canon sweetens the deal (marginally) with some bundled accessories. Buyers get a limited-edition Peak Design Cuff Wrist Strap featuring 30th anniversary branding, plus a 32GB SD card. These are nice additions, but your level of enthusiasm for Canon will determine if they’re worth the extra $400. Meanwhile, the standard G7 X Mark III delivers identical performance and is still a fantastic shooter at the end of the day.
