It often goes that the most iconic silhouettes in history have strong roots in practicality. Take the warmth of Aran cable knit sweaters or the ruggedness of blue jeans. Vintage French work coats followed that same pattern. Coming into popularity during the late 19th century, these jackets were a favorite of carpenters, farmers, and eventually auto workers for their coverage, lightweight material, and pocket selection. Southern California-based Wellen has made its own version of the classic with its Garment Dyed Chore Coat.
Not every long-sleeve outer layer has to weigh you down. And, in the case of this work jacket, it’s also low-profile enough to act as a mid or even bottom layer. Inspired by vintage French chore coats, the Wellen silhouette is deliberately sun-faded to look like perhaps it were passed down to you by an old ancestor. Weighing just 9.6oz, it’s constructed from a 100% organic cotton herringbone fabric that’s been pigment dyed for lived-in softness and to achieve that worn aesthetic.
Perfect for everyday wear, the front of the coat sports four pockets in total — two at the chest and two at the waist — including one chest pocket that features a corozo nut button closure. The two waist pockets have both top and side entry points, and there’s an interior waist pocket for any extra gear as well. Corozo nuts are also used for the five buttons down the front.
